Local marketing

What if your marketing strategy started with your neighbours?

Local businesses often chase online reach first. Starting with the people who live around your shop or van route can be faster and cheaper.

Most local marketing plans begin with a website audit, Google Business Profile tweaks, or a paid search budget. Those tools matter, but they skip the obvious starting point: the homes and businesses within walking or short-drive distance of where you work.

If you run a takeaway, clinic, salon, or trade van, your next job often comes from someone who already lives near you. They may not be searching yet. They might not know your name. A neighbour-first plan fixes that before you spend months chasing rankings.

Walk the area like a prospect

Spend an hour on foot around your base. Note street types, parking, foot traffic, competing signage, and where leaflets still sit on counters. You are not guessing at demographics from a dashboard. You are seeing where a physical introduction would land.

Pick one radius to start. Three streets, one estate, or a single retail strip is enough for a first test. Trying to "cover the city" on day one usually means weak offers and no learning.

Use print as a polite introduction

A simple A5 or A6 leaflet is not spam when the message fits the area. Lead with one clear offer: free quote, first visit discount, seasonal service reminder, or a menu for a new dish. Put your phone number, hours, and a QR code to a short landing page.

Print works because it reaches people who are not in buying mode on Google right now. They see your name on the kitchen counter when the boiler breaks next month.

Pair neighbours with one measurable action

Neighbour-first does not mean "hope for the best." Give each drop its own tracked QR link so you know if that street responded. Even ten scans from 200 leaflets tells you more than a vague "brand awareness" goal.

Build outward in rings

Once one pocket responds, repeat the same offer on the next ring of streets. Reviews and word of mouth from the first wave make the second drop easier. SEO and social ads still help, but they work better when people already recognise your name from the area they live in.
