Local marketing
Why fight for the same Google searches as everyone else?
Shared keywords mean shared costs and shared disappointment. Local businesses can win attention offline and capture easier branded searches online.

"Best plumber near me," "affordable dentist Dublin," "takeaway delivery Manchester." Every competitor targets the same phrases because keyword tools make them obvious. The result is predictable: higher CPCs, rotating map pack winners, and blog posts nobody reads.
Fighting on identical searches is a choice, not a law of physics. You can still show up in search while introducing your name offline so the click that follows is warmer and cheaper.
Shared keywords share pain
When fifteen businesses bid or optimize for one head term, Google and the customer win. Margins shrink for everyone else. Smaller operators without content teams feel it most.
Branded search ("Joe's Plumbing Chorlton") is cheaper and warmer because offline work introduced the name first.
Offline introduces; search confirms
A leaflet, van, or referral puts a name in memory. The search that follows is specific and high-intent. You are not convincing a stranger from scratch. You are confirming what a neighbour already heard.
Track branded query volume in Search Console after a print wave. The lift can be clearer than position changes on generic terms.
Build a list worth owning
Instead of one heroic keyword, collect:
- Your business name plus town
- Your name plus each estate you serve
- Offer-specific landing pages linked from QR codes
Generic SEO still helps for urgent categories, but it should not be the only plan.
Test exit from the red ocean
Pause one broad ad group for two weeks. Spend the budget on a targeted drop. Compare total leads, not click volume. Many owners find the "boring" channel outperforms on cost per booked job.
If you run that test, give each drop its own QR link so results are comparable. flyerfly lets you compare scan counts between batches like ad sets.
Branded search is underrated in keyword reports because volume looks small. Those queries often convert at the highest rate because trust already exists.
When branded volume rises after print, treat that as SEO progress even if generic rankings stayed flat. You are earning demand, not only renting it.
